Variceal bleeding is a severe complication of portal hypertension, causing 70% of all
upper gastrointestinal bleeding episodes in patients with liver cirrhosis.1
Data from placebo-controlled clinical trials show that variceal bleeding is spontaneously
controlled in 40% to 50% of patients.

Epidemiology, Although viral and parasitic agents have been implicated in human cancers, gastric
cancer is currently the only malignant neoplasia recognized as causally associated
in humans with a bacterium. In 1994, the International Agency for Research on Cancer
(IARC) concluded that “there is sufficient evidence in humans for the carcinogenicity of
infection with Helicobacter pylori.”1
